200+ Etsy Shop Name Ideas (Plus Etsy’s Naming Rules)

Your Etsy shop name is the first thing a buyer sees, it sits in your shop’s web address, and it shows up on every listing, receipt and package. A good one is short, easy to spell and flexible enough to grow with you. A bad one can box you into a single product or get you mistaken for someone else’s brand.

This guide covers Etsy’s official shop name rules, a simple step-by-step way to pick a name, 201 original Etsy shop name ideas grouped by niche, and how to check that your favorite is free on Etsy, as a domain and on social media.

Why I Made This List (I’m Bad at Naming Things)

I’ve never felt good at picking names. Every time I started a new business, the name I wanted was already taken, and the short .com domain was never available. So I’d keep adding words until something was free, and my business names always ended up way too long.

That’s why I’ve always leaned on help. First it was name idea lists like this one. Then it was name generator tools. Now it’s AI. I don’t let it pick for me, but it’s great at throwing out a pile of options so I’m not staring at a blank page.

My Etsy shop for digital backgrounds, LensLushBackdrops, got its name with help from AI. I also used AI to name INK (Inner Nature Known) and IZQuest, my inbox cleanup Chrome extension. Each time, the AI gave me the raw ideas, and I picked the one that felt right and checked that it was actually free.

If naming isn’t your strength either, you’re in good company. Use the lists and the steps below, and you’ll have a shortlist in an afternoon.

Etsy Shop Name Rules (What Etsy Actually Allows)

Before you brainstorm, know the limits. According to Etsy’s Help Center, your shop name must be:

  • 4 to 20 characters long. Count carefully: “PetalAndPearlCo” is 15 characters.
  • Letters and numbers only. No spaces, punctuation or special characters, so no &, hyphens, apostrophes or periods.
  • Free of profanity.
  • Not already in use by another Etsy member.
  • Not infringing on anyone’s trademark.

Because spaces aren’t allowed, Etsy suggests using capital letters to separate words, for example “WickAndWillowCo” instead of “wickandwillowco.” Your name becomes part of your shop address at etsy.com/shop/yourshopname.

Can you change your Etsy shop name later?

Yes. You can change it as often as you like before your shop opens. After it opens, Etsy lets you change it up to 5 times from Shop Manager > Settings > Your shop. After that, changes need approval from Etsy Support. Capitalization changes and switching back to a previous name don’t count toward the limit. When you change it, Etsy updates your shop URL, redirects links from the old name, and shows buyers a small “name changed” icon for 45 days. Your old name also stays reserved, so nobody else can take it.

Even so, every change means updating your logo, banner, packaging and social profiles, so it pays to choose well the first time.

How to Choose an Etsy Shop Name in 7 Steps

  1. Describe your shop in three words. Pick the feeling you want buyers to have, such as cozy, bold, playful, minimal or earthy. These words guide every name you consider.
  2. Decide how broad you want to be. “CustomDogCollars” only works if you’ll only ever sell collars. Something like “TailTrailGoods” leaves room for leashes, bandanas and pet portraits later.
  3. Brainstorm a long list. Write down words tied to your materials, style, place, favorite plants or animals, and your own name. Run them through a thesaurus. Aim for 30 or more raw ideas before you judge any of them.
  4. Combine and shorten. Try formulas like feeling + product (SlowGlowStudio), two nouns (StoneAndSprigCo), your name + Studio or Co, or a coined word that blends two words together.
  5. Check the 20-character limit. Cut filler words like “The” and “Shop,” or swap “And” for a shorter word, until each name fits.
  6. Say it out loud. If a friend can’t spell it after hearing it once, buyers won’t be able to find you again. Avoid odd spellings, repeated letters and numbers that could be read two ways.
  7. Shortlist 3 to 5 and check availability. Check Etsy first, then Google, domains and social handles (see below). Keep backups, because your first choice is often taken.

Keywords tip: You don’t need to stuff keywords into your shop name. Etsy search mostly looks at your listing titles, tags and attributes, and your shop also has a separate shop title (a short tagline) where you can describe what you sell. Keep the name brandable and put the keywords there.

5 Etsy Shop Name Styles That Work

Most memorable Etsy shop names fall into one of five styles. Knowing them makes brainstorming much faster, because you can take one word list and run it through each formula.

  • Descriptive names say what you sell, like “OchreAndInk” for art prints. They’re instantly clear to buyers, but can feel limiting if your product line changes.
  • Vibe plus product names pair a mood with a category, like “SlowGlowStudio” or “QuietCottonCo.” This is the most popular style because it’s clear and brandable at the same time.
  • Abstract or coined names blend two words or borrow an unusual one, like “Everlit” or “Glowberry.” They’re usually easy to find in Google because nobody else uses them, but you’ll lean on your photos and shop title to explain what you sell.
  • Personal names use your first name, last name or initials, often with Studio, Designs or Co. They’re unique to you and work for any product, which makes them a safe pick if you’re still figuring out your niche.
  • Playful or punny names like “PurrfectPatchCo” work well for pets, kids and gifts. Keep puns easy to spell and test them on a friend first.

Not sure which style fits? Look at the shops you buy from and notice which names stuck with you after one visit. Then write five names in each style for your own shop. You’ll usually find that one style feels right almost immediately, and that’s the one to develop further.

Finally, think about how the name will look in places other than Etsy: on a small round logo, a shipping label, a business card and an Instagram profile. Short names with clear word breaks look better at small sizes, and a name that works as a hashtag makes it easier for happy buyers to tag you.

Using AI to Brainstorm Etsy Shop Names

AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini or Grok are a quick way to get past a blank page. The trick is giving them enough detail. Tell it your niche, three or four vibe words, and Etsy’s rules, then ask for a lot of options. Here’s a prompt you can copy:

“I’m opening an Etsy shop that sells [your product]. I want the name to feel [vibe word], [vibe word] and [vibe word]. Give me 50 Etsy shop name ideas. Each name must be 4 to 20 characters, letters only, with no spaces or symbols, written in CamelCase. Avoid brand names and trademarks.”

  • Ask for 50, not 5. Most of the list won’t fit, so you want plenty to choose from.
  • Shortlist your favorites. Pick 5 to 10, say them out loud and cut any that are hard to spell.
  • Check every name yourself. AI often suggests names that are already taken on Etsy or run past 20 characters, so count the characters and run each one through Etsy’s availability check, Google, domains and socials.

If you want to skip the prompt, try my free Etsy Shop Name Generator. Pick a niche and a vibe and it gives you 30 ideas at a time, all within Etsy’s 4 to 20 character rule.

200+ Etsy Shop Name Ideas by Niche

Every name below fits Etsy’s rules: 4 to 20 characters, letters only, with capitals to separate words. These are original ideas, not real shops we’re recommending, but Etsy has millions of sellers, so always check availability before you get attached to one. If your favorite is taken, change a word, add “Studio,” “Co” or “Goods,” or swap the word order.

How to Check if Your Etsy Shop Name Is Available

  • On Etsy: The only reliable check is Etsy itself. Type your name into the shop name step when opening your shop (or under Shop Manager > Settings > Your shop if you’re renaming). If it’s taken, Etsy suggests available versions. Etsy appears to treat names the same regardless of capitals, so “MossyInkArt” and “mossyinkart” likely count as the same name, and names from closed shops may stay reserved.
  • On Google: Search the name in quotes. If another business, especially one selling similar products, already uses it, keep looking.
  • Trademarks: In the US, search the USPTO trademark database. Elsewhere, use your country’s trademark office. Etsy won’t allow names that infringe a trademark, and it can cost you your shop later.
  • Domain: Check whether the .com is free at any domain registrar, even if you don’t plan to build a website yet. A matching domain is cheap insurance.
  • Social handles: Look up the name on Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest. If the exact handle is gone, a close version like adding “shop” or “studio” is fine, as long as it’s consistent everywhere.

Etsy Shop Name Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using a brand, character or celebrity name. Names with Disney, Taylor Swift, Stanley or any other trademark can get your shop flagged.
  • Being too narrow. “BlueMugsOnly” is a problem the day you start selling plates.
  • Hard-to-spell words. Clever misspellings like “Kreativ Kandlez” make you harder to find in search.
  • Cramming in keywords. “HandmadeSoyCandleGift” reads like spam and doesn’t help Etsy search much. Use your listings for keywords.
  • Copying a successful shop. One letter off from a popular shop confuses buyers and can lead to complaints.
  • Chasing a trend. Names tied to a meme or this year’s aesthetic can age fast.
  • Skipping the read-aloud test. Run-together words can spell something unfortunate. Read your name in lowercase to spot hidden words.

After You Pick a Name: Set Up for Profit

A great name gets buyers through the door, but your prices and numbers decide whether the shop actually makes money. Before you publish your first listing, run your price through our free Etsy Fee Calculator to see what you’ll keep after listing, transaction and payment processing fees. Once orders start coming in, log your weekly sales, views and orders in the free Etsy Sales Tracker so you can see whether your shop is growing week to week. You’ll find both, plus our other free seller tools, on the Free Tools page.

Etsy Shop Name FAQ

How many characters can an Etsy shop name have?

Between 4 and 20 characters, using letters and numbers only.

Can an Etsy shop name have spaces?

No. Spaces, punctuation and special characters aren’t allowed. Use capital letters to separate words, like “QuietFlameGoods.”

How many times can I change my Etsy shop name?

As many times as you want before your shop opens. After it opens, up to 5 times in your shop settings, and more changes need approval from Etsy Support. Capitalization changes and going back to an old name don’t count.

Will changing my shop name hurt my sales or reviews?

Your listings, reviews and sales history stay with your shop, and Etsy redirects your old shop address to the new one. You will need to update your logo, banner, packaging and social profiles.

Should my Etsy shop name include keywords?

It can, but it doesn’t need to. Etsy search relies mostly on listing titles, tags and attributes. A brandable name plus a descriptive shop title usually works better than a keyword-stuffed name.

Can I use my own name as my Etsy shop name?

Yes, and it’s a good choice if you might sell different products over time. If your name is taken, add “Studio,” “Designs” or “Co.”

What if the Etsy shop name I want is taken?

Try adding a word like Studio, Co, Goods or Made, swapping word order, or using a synonym. Don’t just add random numbers, since they’re hard to remember.

Are Etsy shop name generators worth using?

They’re useful for brainstorming. Many general generators suggest names with spaces, ampersands or more than 20 characters, so check every result against Etsy’s rules and for availability. That’s why I built my own Etsy shop name generator that sticks to Etsy’s length rules.

Pick the name that feels like you, check it’s free, and move on to the fun part: listing your first product. You can always refine it later, but a clear, simple name will serve you for years.
